Slough Trading Estate sets the pace

Slough's economy is unusually concentrated. Slough Trading Estate, which runs west from the town centre between the A4 and the railway, is one of the largest business estates in single ownership in Europe. It has been a home to manufacturing for a century, and today it mixes factories, food producers, distributors, trade suppliers and a large and growing cluster of data centres.

That mix produces a particular kind of urgent work. A factory needs a replacement component before the next shift. A data hall needs a set of drives, a switch or a power unit fitted during a maintenance window. A food producer has a short-notice order for a London customer. In each case the deadline is fixed by someone else, and the consignment cannot wait for a parcel network's next collection.

We send one van and one driver for it, and the vehicle goes directly from collection to delivery. When you book, we find the nearest suitable van and confirm an estimated collection time based on its position.

Three kinds of urgent job

Data centre hardware

Data centres are high-security sites with booked deliveries. Hardware usually needs to arrive inside a maintenance window, signed for by a named engineer, and the driver will often be escorted on site. We ask for the access details at booking and pass the driver's details to the site as soon as the van is allocated. For packing guidance and handling of servers and network kit, see our IT equipment courier page.

Factory parts

When a line stops, every hour costs money. The quickest route is usually a dedicated van straight from the supplier, wherever they are, to your goods-in. Give us the part's dimensions and weight, and say if it must stay upright or needs a forklift to unload.

Chilled and frozen food

Food manufacturers on and around the estate send chilled consignments to wholesalers, caterers and distribution centres. Our refrigerated courier service explains how temperature ranges are agreed and how the van is prepared before loading.

Getting onto the estate quickly

The trading estate is big, with a grid of internal roads. Give us the unit number and road name, not just "Slough Trading Estate", along with the gate or goods-in door. If your site needs a delivery booking, send the reference when you book.

Beyond the trading estate

Wexham Park Hospital, to the north of the town, is the main acute hospital for east Berkshire and south Buckinghamshire. Equipment, records and packaged samples move between it, clinics and laboratories. In the town centre, offices around the station and the High Street send contracts and IT equipment. Langley, to the east, has its own business parks and industrial units, and Windsor and Eton bring a steady stream of retail, hospitality and event work.

Then there is the airport. Heathrow's cargo area and the forwarders at Poyle and Colnbrook are only a few miles away, so many Slough businesses send exports and collect imports through them. Our Heathrow page explains how landside handovers work and why we do not go airside.

Roads and pinch points

Slough has three M4 junctions: junction 5 at Langley, junction 6 for the town centre and Windsor via the A355, and junction 7 at the western end near Burnham. The A4 runs through the town as the main east to west road, the A355 runs north to Beaconsfield and the M40, and the M25 is only a few minutes east via junction 5 or the A4.

The busiest spots are the A4 through the town centre, the A355 Tuns Lane approach to junction 6, and the M4 eastbound towards the M25 interchange at peak times. Inside the trading estate, shift changes can slow the internal roads.

FAQ

Common questions

Can you deliver hardware into a data centre on the trading estate?

Yes. Data centres on the estate run strict security, so the booking needs more detail than usual: the site and building, the name on the access request, the delivery window and whether the kit goes to a loading bay or a secure goods-in room. Most sites want the driver's name and vehicle registration in advance, which we pass on when the van is allocated. Equipment is signed for by the person your site nominates.

Our production line on the estate has stopped. How fast can a replacement part arrive?

That depends on where the part is. We allocate the nearest suitable van to the supplier and confirm an estimated collection time when you book, and the driver then comes straight to your goods-in without stopping anywhere else. Tell us the part's weight and size, the supplier's contact and your latest acceptable delivery time. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page covers line-down work in more depth.

Do you collect from Windsor, Langley and Burnham as well as central Slough?

Yes. They are all a few miles from the town centre, and we cover them in exactly the same way, as we do every address in mainland UK. Windsor's centre has narrow streets, pedestrian areas and heavy visitor traffic around the castle, so a collection from a shop or office there needs a clear note of where a van can safely stop.

We produce chilled food on the estate. Can you take an order to a London wholesaler overnight?

Yes. We run around the clock, so a late-evening collection for an early-morning delivery is routine. Book a refrigerated van, tell us the temperature range the product must stay within (typical chilled ranges are 2–8 °C), and give us the wholesaler's opening time and goods-in rules. The van is brought down to temperature before loading, and temperature records are available where the vehicle supports them.

Can a van shuttle between our Slough unit and a forwarder at Poyle several times a day?

Yes. Poyle is only a few miles away, just across the M25, so several short runs in a day are practical. You can book each run as it is needed, or set up a regular pattern so collections happen at agreed times without a call each day. For a fixed timetable, our scheduled courier page explains how regular runs are arranged.
