How Hampshire splits for courier work

Hampshire is a large county with three quite different economies, and they line up with its main roads. The M3 corridor in the north carries offices, technology firms and aerospace. The M27 along the south coast links the two cities, their ports and the industrial estates between them. The A303 and A34 in the west serve warehouses, food producers and the rural north-west. We look at each in turn below.

Whichever part of Hampshire you send from, the service is the same: one van and driver, booked for your consignment, going directly from collection to delivery. We allocate whichever suitable van is nearest when you book, and confirm an estimated collection time from there.

The M3 corridor: Basingstoke, Farnborough and Winchester

Basingstoke is a major office town, with business parks around junctions 6 and 7 of the M3 and at Chineham in the north-east of the town. Insurance, IT and telecoms firms send laptops, servers and network equipment between offices, data centres and engineers. Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital adds clinical and supplier traffic.

Farnborough is known for aerospace and defence. The airport handles business aviation, the Farnborough International exhibition site hosts major shows, and the surrounding business parks house engineering and technology companies. Their urgent consignments tend to be precise and valuable: a calibrated test instrument, a set of machined components or documents for a programme review. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page explains how we handle parts for stopped lines and test schedules.

Winchester is the county town, home to Hampshire County Council, the Crown Court, the University of Winchester and the Royal Hampshire County Hospital. Its work is mainly documents, records and equipment moving between public bodies, law firms and clinics.

The M27 coast: Southampton to Havant

The south coast is the busiest part of the county for freight. Southampton has its own page, which covers the docks, the cruise terminals and the marine trades: see our Southampton courier service. Portsmouth, with the naval base and the ferry port, is covered on the Portsmouth courier page.

Between the two cities, the M27 junctions serve a string of industrial estates and business parks. Segensworth, beside junction 9 near Fareham, and Whiteley next to it have warehousing, light manufacturing and offices. Eastleigh, at junctions 5 and 13 of the M27 and M3, has Southampton Airport and a long-established industrial area. Further east, Havant and Waterlooville have manufacturers and trade suppliers close to the A3(M).

Name the estate and the unit

Large estates such as Segensworth have several roads with similar names and many units without visible numbers. A unit number, a company name on the building and a contact's mobile phone number save the driver from touring the estate.

The west: Andover, the A303 and the A34

Andover sits on the A303, the main road between the M3 and the South West. Walworth Business Park and the estates around the town have distribution centres and manufacturers, and Andover is a natural starting point for runs to Salisbury, Exeter and the West Country. The A34 runs north from Winchester past Newbury to Oxford and the Midlands, a key route for freight that is not going via London. Romsey, Stockbridge and the Test Valley have food producers, agricultural suppliers and small engineering firms.

Roads and the usual delays

The M3 between junctions 2 and 4A and the approach to the M25 is the main slow point heading for London. On the coast, the M27 queues around junctions 3 to 5 and 9 to 11 at peak times, and an incident on the Itchen Bridge or the Northam Bridge in Southampton spreads quickly. The A303 is single carriageway in stretches further west and slows badly on summer weekends.

FAQ

Common questions

Can you collect from a business park in Basingstoke and deliver to a data centre near the M25 today?

Yes. Most of the data centre sites around Slough and west London are 30 to 40 miles from Basingstoke via the M3 and M25. Data halls have strict access procedures, so give us the site's booking reference, the loading bay and the name of the person who will receive the kit. Our IT equipment courier page explains how servers and network hardware are loaded and secured.

Do you cover the New Forest and the rural north of the county?

Yes. We collect and deliver anywhere in mainland Hampshire, including the New Forest villages, Lymington, Stockbridge, Alresford and the downland around Kingsclere. Rural addresses take longer to reach than a motorway junction, and the New Forest roads have animals on them and low speed limits, so give us a postcode and any notes on access.

We exhibit at Farnborough. Can you bring stand materials in on build day?

Yes, for consignments that fit a van up to a Luton with a tail lift. Large events at Farnborough have their own logistics arrangements, with booked delivery slots, vehicle passes and marshalled access, so send us the organiser's delivery instructions with your booking. Our events and exhibitions courier page covers what to prepare.

We produce chilled food in the Test Valley. Can you deliver to a London wholesaler overnight?

Yes. We run 24 hours a day, so a late collection from a farm or production unit around Romsey or Stockbridge can reach a London market or wholesaler early the next morning. Book a refrigerated van and tell us the temperature range, the number of cases or pallets and the receiving site's delivery window. Typical chilled ranges are 2–8 °C, and we agree the range with you at booking.

Our Andover warehouse ships to retailers every day. Can that become a regular run?

Yes. If you send to the same stores or customers on fixed days, our scheduled courier service sets it up as a booked run with the same vehicle size, collection window and delivery order each time. Tell us the frequency, the typical load and the delivery windows, and we will agree it with you.
