An island city with three ways out
Portsmouth is unusual among British cities because most of it sits on an island. Portsea Island is joined to the mainland by three main road links: the M275 into the west of the city, the A3 across Portsbridge at Hilsea, and the A2030 Eastern Road on the east side. Every van entering or leaving the city uses one of them, so the first and last few miles of a Portsmouth job are often the slowest.
That is the main reason to book a dedicated vehicle for urgent work here. A parcel network routes your consignment through a hub, adding another trip off and on the island. We send one van and driver who collect your consignment and drive directly to the delivery address. The vehicle sent is the nearest suitable one at the time of booking, and we confirm an estimated collection time once it is allocated.
Defence, marine and engineering consignments
Portsmouth is home to the Royal Navy's main base, and a large supply chain of defence contractors, shipbuilding and repair firms, electronics specialists and marine engineers has grown around it, on the island and along the M27 towards Fareham and Southampton. Their urgent consignments are usually small but important: an electronic module for a ship's system, a set of drawings for a refit review, a test instrument going back to a calibration lab, or a replacement part for a stopped machine.
Two things matter on these jobs. The first is the paperwork: a delivery reference, a named recipient and the right gate. The second is condition, as many parts are fragile or calibrated. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page covers how parts are secured in the van, and the fragile and high-value courier service explains how we handle goods where any knock matters.
Controlled sites
Military and secure sites set their own rules for vehicles and drivers. We deliver to the point you or your contractor specify and follow the instructions issued for that site. Tell us about any access requirements when you book, not when the van arrives.
Hospitals, the university and the city centre
Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, at the foot of Portsdown Hill, is the main acute hospital for Portsmouth and south-east Hampshire. Clinics, labs and suppliers move equipment, records and properly packaged samples between it and other sites. Samples must be packaged by the sender before collection; our medical and pharmaceutical courier page explains what that means in practice.
The University of Portsmouth occupies much of the city centre around Guildhall Square, sending research equipment, exam papers and documents between departments and partner institutions. Further north, Lakeside North Harbour in Cosham is a large office park beside the M27, and the retail and leisure around Gunwharf Quays and Commercial Road generate stock and display deliveries.
The ferry port and the Clean Air Zone
Portsmouth International Port, on the west side of the island where the M275 comes in, runs ferries to France, Spain and the Channel Islands. For courier work, that usually means delivering goods landside to a haulier or forwarder before a sailing. We do not take vans onto the island ferries as standard; the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands are outside our normal mainland service, so ask us if that is what you need.
Portsmouth also has a Clean Air Zone covering the city centre and the south-west of the island. We check whether a delivery enters it and include any applicable charge in the quote, so nothing is added after the job.

Typical journeys from Portsmouth
Figures are approximate road miles; your actual distance depends on the collection and delivery addresses.
| From Portsmouth to | Approx. road distance | Main route |
|---|---|---|
| Fareham (Segensworth) | 12 miles | M27 |
| Chichester | 18 miles | A27 |
| Southampton | 20 miles | M27 |
| Guildford | 50 miles | A3 |
| Brighton | 50 miles | A27 |
| Heathrow | 65 miles | A3, M25 |
| Central London | 75 miles | A3 |
The A3 is the direct road to London and is dual carriageway most of the way, although the Hindhead tunnel and the A3 around Guildford can slow at peak times. Heading west, the M27 is quicker but queues around Fareham and Southampton.
For the rest of the county, from Basingstoke to Andover, see our Hampshire courier page; for the docks and the marine trades further west, our Southampton courier service. When you are ready, request a Portsmouth quote or call 020 4525 2039.
FAQ
Common questions
Does the Portsmouth Clean Air Zone affect a courier van?
The zone covers the south-west of Portsea Island, including the city centre, Portsea, Landport and Somers Town; the international port itself sits outside it. It charges certain vehicle types that do not meet its emissions standards, and at the time of writing vans are not among them. Rules can change, so we check the zone for every booking that enters it, and any charge that did apply would be included in your quote.
Can you deliver parts to a contractor working inside the naval base?
We deliver to the point the base or the contractor tells us to use, which is usually a gate, a goods reception or a contractor's compound. Access inside the base is controlled and needs the right passes, so give us the contractor's name, the delivery reference, the gate and a contact who can meet the driver or arrange clearance. Without that, the van can be held at the gate.
We have goods for a lorry booked on a ferry from Portsmouth tonight. Can you get them to the haulier?
Yes, if the haulier or forwarder gives us a landside meeting point and a cut-off time. Ferry departures are fixed, so tell us the sailing time and when the haulier needs the goods, not just the departure. Export paperwork must be complete before collection. If you need a dedicated van to take the goods all the way, see our European courier service.
How long does it take to get off Portsea Island at rush hour?
It varies, but the island has only three main road links to the mainland, so they all fill up at the same times. The M275, the A3 at Hilsea and the Eastern Road can each add a good part of an hour in the morning and evening peaks, or after an incident. For a fixed delivery time we build that into the plan rather than hoping for a clear run.
