Crawley works around the airport

Gatwick is the reason Crawley's economy looks the way it does. Airlines, aviation engineering firms, airport suppliers, hotels and logistics businesses cluster around it, and the town's industrial and office districts have grown up on the airport's southern side. The M23 links all of it to London and the M25 in one direction and to Brighton in the other.

For a courier, that means a mix of work: parts and stock for Manor Royal, export shipments to forwarders near the airport, documents for head offices, and the occasional passenger emergency. Each job is one van and one driver for your consignment, going directly from collection to delivery. At the time you book, we pick the nearest suitable vehicle and confirm an estimated collection time based on its position.

Manor Royal business district

Manor Royal, on the northern side of Crawley between the town and Gatwick, is the largest business district in the area known as the Gatwick Diamond. It covers offices, factories, laboratories, warehouses and trade counters, with businesses in aviation, engineering, pharmaceuticals, technology and distribution.

Typical urgent bookings from Manor Royal include:

  • a replacement part for a production line or test rig, brought in from a supplier elsewhere in the UK;
  • a pallet or two of finished stock for a customer who cannot wait for the next network collection;
  • an export shipment taken round to a forwarder near the airport before the cut-off;
  • servers and IT equipment moving between offices.

For pallet loads, our pallet delivery page explains how many pallets each van takes and how to prepare them. For anything that cannot wait at all, the urgent courier page sets out how a same-day booking runs.

Gatwick: landside only

We deliver to and collect from landside addresses at and around Gatwick: forwarders' and handling agents' warehouses, airport hotels, offices and the terminal drop-off areas. We have no airside access, we do not deliver to aircraft or airside stores, and we do not offer airside AOG work. If something needs to go airside, we take it to the landside premises of the agent or engineering company that holds the passes.

Handing over at a terminal

For a passenger handover, agree a meeting point with the passenger before the driver arrives, and make sure their mobile phone is on. Terminal forecourts are busy and vehicles cannot wait long. Bags travelling separately can be booked through our luggage courier service.

The town and its neighbourhoods

Crawley was built as a new town around a series of neighbourhoods, each with its own parade of shops, and the main shopping centre and offices lie in the middle. Three Bridges station, on the main line between London and Brighton, has offices around it. County Oak, on the A23 at the north-west edge of town, has retail parks and trade outlets. Crawley Hospital provides community and outpatient services; the main acute hospital for the area is East Surrey Hospital in Redhill, a short drive north.

Beyond the town, the same service covers Horsham, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and Horley, and every other address in mainland UK.

Roads and pinch points

The M23 runs along the eastern side of Crawley, with junction 9 serving Gatwick, junction 10 the east of the town and the A264 to East Grinstead, and junction 11 at Pease Pottage for the A23 south and the A264 to Horsham. The A23 runs through the town as London Road, past Manor Royal and County Oak, and the A2011 Crawley Avenue crosses it east to west.

The slow points are the Gatwick approaches at busy times of day, the A23 through Manor Royal at shift changes, and the M25 and M23 interchange at junction 7 for northbound journeys. Summer holiday peaks make the airport roads busier still.

FAQ

Common questions

A passenger has left their passport at home. Can you get it to them at Gatwick before check-in closes?

Often, yes, if the home is close enough and you call straight away. We collect from the address and the driver meets the passenger at an agreed landside point at the North or South Terminal, usually the drop-off area. The passenger must be there in person with a mobile phone. Timing depends on distance and traffic, so we tell you the estimated arrival when you book and you can decide whether it will work. Any terminal drop-off or parking charge is included in the price.

Can you take a replacement part from a supplier in the Midlands to our unit in Manor Royal today?

Yes. Birmingham to Crawley is roughly 160 miles via the M40, M25 and M23, a run that fits comfortably in the day if the part is ready by mid-morning. Give us the supplier's contact, the part's weight and size, and the latest time it is useful to you. The driver comes straight to your goods-in, and you can follow the van with live updates.

Do you cover Horsham, East Grinstead and Haywards Heath?

Yes, along with Three Bridges, Pound Hill, Horley and the villages between them. Horsham is about 8 miles west of Crawley on the A264, East Grinstead about 10 miles east, and Haywards Heath around 12 miles south. All of them are covered exactly as Crawley is, with a dedicated van allocated from wherever the nearest suitable vehicle is.

Can you deliver into a warehouse at Gatwick that only accepts booked slots?

Yes. Many forwarders' and distributors' warehouses around the airport work to booked slots. Send us the slot time, the booking reference and the goods-in door, plus the air waybill or order number if the goods are for export. We aim to arrive within the window. If the site turns the van away because a reference is missing, a second attempt costs time, so the details are worth checking before you book.
