Croydon sends work in two directions

Most Croydon consignments head one of two ways. North, into central London, go contracts, court papers, IT kit and samples for the West End, the City and the hospitals. South, down the A23 and M23, go trade goods and stock for Gatwick, Crawley, Brighton and the Sussex coast. A good share also goes round the M25 to Kent, Surrey and the Thames Valley.

Whichever way it goes, the van and driver you book carry only your consignment. It is collected from your premises and taken directly to the delivery address, with no sorting hub in between. When you book, we allocate the nearest suitable vehicle and confirm an estimated collection time based on where it is.

Our own office is in Croydon, at Southbridge House, Southbridge Place, Croydon, CR0 4HA. That is where bookings and business accounts are handled; it is not a depot, and goods are never dropped off there. The van comes to you.

Where the bookings come from

Croydon's bookings come from three places: the office and court district around East Croydon station, which sends documents and laptops; the retail parks, trade counters and estates along the Purley Way and Beddington Lane, which send heavier trade loads; and the borough's hospitals and clinics.

The town centre

Central Croydon is a large office district, clustered around East Croydon station, Ruskin Square, Wellesley Road and George Street. Government departments, insurers, law firms and professional services businesses all work here. Their urgent consignments are usually small but time-bound: a signed agreement, a set of original documents, a laptop for a new starter at another office.

The courts are a regular source of work too. Croydon Magistrates' Court and the court centre on Altyre Road generate bundles and papers that need to move between local firms, chambers in central London and other court buildings. A dedicated van with a named recipient is the simplest way to make sure the right document reaches the right person on time. Our document courier service covers this kind of work in more detail.

Purley Way, Waddon and Beddington

The Purley Way (the A23 west of the town centre) is lined with retail parks, trade counters, builders' merchants and distribution units, and it runs on into the industrial estates around Waddon and Beddington Lane. Typical bookings are trade orders for sites across south London and Surrey, replacement stock for a shop that has sold out, and returns going back to a supplier.

These loads are heavier and bulkier. Plasterboard, timber lengths, boxed kitchen units and pallets of fixings all have different needs, so we ask for weights and dimensions at booking and pick the van from our vehicle guide accordingly.

Hospitals and clinics

Croydon University Hospital in Thornton Heath is the borough's main acute hospital, and there are clinics, GP practices and care providers across the area. Consignments include equipment, records and properly packaged samples. We transport what your team has packaged and labelled; we do not open or repack clinical goods.

Croydon and London's charging zones

Croydon sits inside Greater London, so London's ULEZ rules may apply to the vehicle, and journeys into the centre during charging hours may attract the Congestion Charge. Any charge that applies is included in the price you agree before we collect. Our London courier page explains how these rules affect jobs across the capital.

Getting out of Croydon

The A23 is the spine. It runs north through Thornton Heath and Streatham towards central London and south through Purley and Coulsdon to the M23 and M25. The A232 crosses the borough east to west, and the A212 and A22 head south-east towards Caterham and the M25 at Godstone. Most longer journeys join the M25 at junction 7 (for the M23) or junction 6 (for the A22).

The slow points are well known locally. Fiveways, where the A23 and A232 meet at Waddon, queues at peak times, as do Purley Cross and the approach to East Croydon station. The town centre's one-way system and tram routes also mean a van may need a longer path to reach an address than the map suggests. For a fixed delivery time, we plan for that and you get live updates during the job.

FAQ

Common questions

Your office is in Croydon. Can I drop a parcel off there?

No. Our office at Southbridge House, Southbridge Place, Croydon, CR0 4HA is where we run bookings and accounts, not a depot or a counter, so there is nowhere to hand goods in. Every collection is made from your address: a van is allocated from wherever the nearest suitable vehicle is and comes to you. That is usually quicker anyway, because the driver goes straight from your door to the delivery address.

Can you get a bundle from a Croydon firm to the Royal Courts of Justice before a hearing?

Yes. The Strand is roughly 11 miles from central Croydon up the A23 and through Brixton or Vauxhall, but that route is slow at peak times, so book as early as you can and tell us the latest time the bundle must be in. Give the driver the court, the case name or number and the clerk or counsel's name. Our legal and financial courier page explains how we handle signed handovers for chambers and court deliveries.

We run a trade counter on the Purley Way. Can you take an order to a site in Kent this afternoon?

Yes. Most of west and mid Kent is reachable from the Purley Way in an hour or two via the M25, traffic permitting. Tell us what the order weighs and how long the longest item is, so we send a van it fits in, and whether the site has a forklift or someone to help unload. For long lengths or heavy boxed goods with no help at the far end, a Luton van with a tail lift is often the better choice.

Does the ULEZ or Congestion Charge add anything to a Croydon job?

Croydon is a London borough, so London's ULEZ rules can apply to the vehicle on any job here, and the Congestion Charge comes in when the route enters the central zone during charging hours. You do not need to work any of that out. We include whatever charge applies in the fixed price you agree before collection, and the figure does not change afterwards unless the job itself changes.

Can a hospital department in Croydon book a regular run to a lab elsewhere in London?

Yes. Regular runs are set up as scheduled bookings with agreed collection points and times, so nobody has to phone each day. Samples must be packaged by your team before handover, with UN3373 consignments in P650 triple packaging, and if the goods need to stay cold we use a refrigerated van and agree the temperature range with you. Our scheduled courier page explains how contract runs work.
